– FEFCO (Fédération Européenne des Fabricants de Carton Ondulé), European Association of Corrugated Cardoard Manufacturers, and
– ESBO (European Solid Board Organization), the successor organization of ASSCO (Association Européenne des Fabricants de Caisses en Carton Compact), the European Association of Hardboard Packaging Manufacturers.
The Federation has established an international industry reference book, the FEFCO-ASSCO Corrugated Packaging Catalog, which is the main guide for manufacturers of corrugated cardboard packaging.
The FEFCO catalog is a classifier of cardboard boxes, intricated die-cut products (corrugated trays), corrugated packaging auxiliary elements, and also other kinds of packaging paper products made of cardboard and corrugated cardboard, as well as the guide to various works for production of corrugated cardboard packaging.
To simplify communication between manufacturers of corrugated packaging and customers, the four-digit FEFCO-ESBO code has been assigned for the most common world forms of corrugated cardboard and heavy cardboard packaging. As an official system, the FEFCO-ESBO code is adopted by ICCA, the International Corrugated Cardoard Association, affiliated to all countries of the world.
The FEFCO code consists of numbers and has the form XXXX-XXXX, where the first part indicates the type of corrugated packaging, and the second part specifies design features (number of gluing points, shape, assembly order).
In the description of the main groups of types, the terms “Box”, “Container” and “Tray” are used interchangeably in the context of descriptions.
01 – Commercial rolls and sheets;
02 – Folding boxes of simplified design. The corrugated boxes are made from one single pattern with flaps of the lid, bottom and side seam. The side seam is held together with glue, staples or tape, forming a side shell;
03 – Telescopic boxes consist of several parts, a separate bottom and a lid that covers the box in height;
04 – Self-assembling boxes and “folder-type” trays. They consist of one single pattern, are assembled using tongue joints without the use of auxiliary means (glue, staples, tape). Cut-out handles and “windows” can be provided by the design;
05 – Drawers, glued constructions. They consist of several parts and are assembled with glue, staples and adhesive tape. This group includes covers (shells) and sleeves that move apart in different directions or fit each into other;
06 – Boxes of rigid type, firmly connected boxes. Corrugated packaging is assembled of separate end parts and shells. They require bonding with auxiliary materials;
07 – Ready-made glued boxes and containers. Mainly composed of one piece, they are supplied flat and ready to use thanks to simple assembly;
08 – Reserve group;
09 – Internal fittings for packaging and corrugated containers: internal liners, linings, partitions, dividers, etc., applicable to the structure of the case or as single items. The number of elements is arbitrary and can be increased or decreased as needed.
Corrugated packaging manufacturers and customers are used actively the unified FEFCO catalog for ordering of corrugated products. The managers of PJSC “Zhydachiv Pulp and Paper Combine” (PJSC ZhPPC) will select the most appropriate packaging and corrugated packaging according to your order.
